What is an experience letter?
A letter from an employer confirming that someone worked for them, in what role, and for how long. It is what a future employer asks for during background verification, and it is often the only proof of past employment an applicant has. It is sometimes called a service certificate or work experience certificate.
How is it different from a relieving letter?
A relieving letter confirms that the employee has been formally released and has no dues outstanding — it is about the exit. An experience letter is about the tenure and the work. Many employers issue one document covering both; if you need that, use the citation field to add a line confirming the employee has been relieved of their duties.
Should the salary be mentioned?
Usually not. Most experience letters omit it, and including it hands the employee’s next negotiation to their future employer. Some verification processes ask for it specifically, which is why it is a toggle here rather than always on or always off.
Can an employer refuse to give one?
In practice it is a normal part of a clean exit, and a refusal is a red flag to future employers. If one is not forthcoming, payslips, the appointment letter, PF records and Form 16 together establish employment history well enough for most verification processes.
