Frequently asked questions
When do I need a delivery challan instead of an invoice?
Whenever goods move without a sale taking place: sending material out for job work, transferring stock between your own locations, sending goods on approval, or moving equipment for repair or an exhibition. GST rules require a challan for these, precisely because there is no invoice to accompany the consignment.
How many copies do I need?
Three, conventionally: the original for the consignee, a duplicate for the transporter, and a triplicate for the consignor. Print the page three times and mark them, or state the copy on your custom footer.
Does a challan have to show the value of the goods?
It depends on why the goods are moving. A challan for job work or a stock transfer usually carries a value for insurance and e-way bill purposes even though nothing is being sold; in other cases showing a price can cause confusion at a checkpoint. The tool makes it a toggle, and the CSV export follows whichever you chose.
Is a challan the same as an e-way bill?
No. The challan is the document that accompanies the goods; the e-way bill is generated on the GST portal and carries its own number, which you then write onto the challan. Above your state’s consignment value threshold — commonly ₹50,000 — you need both.
