This is the quick estimate a contractor quotes from: cement at 0.4 bags a square foot, steel at 4 kg, sand at 1.8 cubic feet. These thumb rules are remarkably durable across ordinary Indian construction — but they are averages over a whole building, and anything with long spans or a basement leaves the range entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How much cement is needed for 1,000 square feet?

About 400 bags at the usual rate of 0.4 bags per square foot, for an RCC-framed residential building. The range in practice is 0.35 to 0.45, and where you land depends on how much of the building is structure — heavy footings, thick slabs and many columns push it up.

How much steel per square foot?

About 4 kg for ordinary residential construction, with 3.5 to 4.5 the usual range. A 2,000 sq ft house therefore takes roughly 8 tonnes. Anything appreciably outside that range is worth checking against a bar bending schedule before ordering — it is a lot of money either way.

How accurate are these thumb rules?

Good enough to order approximately and to check whether a supplier's quantity is plausible; not good enough for anything that has to be right. They are averages over a whole building, so a single-storey house with heavy footings and a four-storey one with slim columns land in very different places. Where the number matters, work it out from the element.

Do these include labour?

No. This is the material bill only, which is roughly 55–65% of a construction cost. Labour, plant, formwork, fixtures, sanitaryware and electrical goods sit outside it — the house construction cost calculator covers the whole picture.

How much wastage should I allow?

Around 3% as a blanket figure, though it varies by material: cement and steel waste less than tiles and bricks, which get broken in handling and cut to fit. Ordering with no wastage allowance guarantees a second delivery for a small quantity at a worse rate.
