What is a unit of electricity?
One unit is one kilowatt-hour: a 1,000 W appliance running for one hour, or a 100 W fan running for ten. Your bill charges per unit, so cost is simply watts × hours ÷ 1000 × tariff.
Which appliance uses the most electricity?
Anything that makes heat. Geysers, irons, induction hobs and heaters draw 1,500-3,000 W and use more in twenty minutes than a fan does all day. Air conditioners are the other big one, mostly because they run for hours.
Why is my actual bill higher than this?
Most tariffs are slabbed, so the units above a threshold cost more than the earlier ones, and bills add fixed charges, duty and taxes on top. Appliances that cycle — fridges, inverter ACs — also vary from their nameplate rating. Treat this as the energy cost, not the whole bill.
