Frequently asked questions
How many rent receipts do I need for HRA?
Most employers ask for receipts covering every month you are claiming, though many accept quarterly ones. Generate monthly if you are unsure — a set that covers more than was asked for is never rejected, and one with gaps usually is. If you moved in partway through the year, start the run from the month you moved in rather than from April.
Is the landlord’s PAN mandatory on a rent receipt?
Your employer must collect the landlord’s PAN when annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 — roughly ₹8,334 a month. Below that, receipts alone are usually enough. If the landlord genuinely has no PAN, a signed declaration from them stating so is the accepted substitute, and this tool leaves the field blank rather than inventing one.
Does a rent receipt need a revenue stamp?
A ₹1 revenue stamp is expected when a single payment made in cash exceeds ₹5,000. Rent paid by bank transfer or UPI does not need one, because the transfer itself is the evidence. The stamp box is on by default and can be switched off.
Can I claim HRA on rent paid to my parents?
Yes, provided it is real: they must own the property, the rent must actually be transferred to them, and they must declare it as income in their own return. Rent paid to a spouse is routinely disallowed. Assessing officers look at this closely, so keep the bank transfers as well as the receipts.
Are these receipts valid without the landlord’s signature?
No. A receipt is an acknowledgement by the person who received the money, so it means nothing until they sign it. Print the set, get each one signed, and keep them — you will need them if the claim is ever questioned, which can be years later.
Is my landlord’s information uploaded anywhere?
No. The receipts are drawn in your browser and printed by it, and the draft is kept in this browser only. A rent receipt carries a landlord’s name, address and PAN, which is exactly the kind of document that should not be handed to a stranger’s server to be turned into a PDF.
