Frequently asked questions
How is HRA exemption calculated?
It is the lowest of three figures: the HRA actually received; rent paid minus 10% of basic salary; and 50% of basic for metro cities or 40% elsewhere. Because it is the lowest that applies, increasing just one of them often changes nothing.
Which cities count as metro?
Only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and every other city are non-metro for this purpose and get 40%, however large or expensive they are.
Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?
No. HRA exemption is an old-regime benefit only. For someone paying substantial rent it is often the single largest reason the old regime still wins.
Do I need the landlord's PAN?
If your annual rent exceeds โน1,00,000, yes โ your employer must collect it. Below that, rent receipts are usually enough. Rent paid to a spouse is routinely disallowed; rent paid to parents is allowed if it is genuine, declared as their income, and actually transferred.
