What is a HEIC file and why can nothing open it?
HEIC is the format iPhones have shot in by default since iOS 11. It stores roughly the same quality in about half the space of JPEG, which is why Apple adopted it — but support outside Apple's ecosystem is still patchy, so the files often will not open on Windows, on the web, or in the upload form you need them for.
Does converting to JPG lose quality?
A little, because both formats are lossy and the image is being decoded and re-encoded. At 90% quality the difference is not visible at normal viewing sizes. If you want no further loss at all, choose PNG — at the cost of a file several times larger.
Why does this tool take a moment to start?
No browser can decode HEIC on its own, so unlike the other image tools here this one needs a real decoder: libheif, compiled to WebAssembly, several megabytes, downloaded the first time you convert something and cached afterwards. What travels over the network is the decoder coming down — never your photos going up.
How do I stop my iPhone producing HEIC?
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible makes it shoot JPEG instead. You lose the space saving, and existing photos are unaffected — those still need converting.
Can I convert a whole folder at once?
Yes. Select as many files as you like and download the results as a single ZIP. They are decoded a couple at a time to keep memory use bounded on large batches.
