Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CTC, gross salary and in-hand salary?
CTC is everything the employer spends on you, including employer PF and gratuity. Gross salary is what payroll processes before deductions. In-hand is what lands in your account after PF, professional tax and income tax.
What percentage of CTC is usually basic?
Commonly 40% to 50%. A higher basic means more PF and gratuity โ better long-term savings, slightly lower monthly cash. There is no legal fixed percentage, though wage rules push employers to keep basic at a reasonable share.
Why is gratuity inside my CTC when I have not received it?
Because employers count what they set aside for it. Gratuity is only payable after five years of continuous service, so if you leave before that it is money that was in your CTC and never reached you.
Is employer PF really part of my salary?
It is your money, but it goes to your PF account rather than your bank account. It counts as a benefit, not as spendable monthly income โ which is why the gross salary figure matters more when you are budgeting.
