Frequently asked questions
How should a bill be split fairly?
Everyone covers their own items, shared plates divide equally, and tax and tip go in proportion to what each person consumed. Splitting the whole bill by headcount is simpler but means the person who had a salad subsidises the one who had three courses.
Why is tax apportioned rather than split evenly?
Because tax is charged as a percentage of what was ordered. Someone who ordered twice as much generated twice the tax, so splitting it evenly quietly shifts cost onto the lighter eaters.
What about drinks that only some people had?
Add them to that person's own items. Anything genuinely shared โ a bottle everyone drank from, starters for the table โ goes in the shared field, where it divides equally.
