Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an invoice and a receipt?

An invoice requests payment and carries a due date; a receipt confirms payment has been made and carries the date and method it arrived by. You normally issue an invoice first and a receipt once it is settled — the same tool builds both here.

Can I use this for rent receipts?

Yes. Enter the landlord as the issuer, the tenant as the payer, and describe the line as rent for the period covered. If your employer needs it for an HRA claim they will usually also want the landlord’s PAN on the receipt above a threshold, so add it to the address block.

Does a receipt need a number?

It is not always a legal requirement, but sequential numbering is what makes receipts useful at audit and stops the same payment being recorded twice. The Next button steps the number for you while keeping your prefix and padding.

Should a receipt show tax?

If the underlying supply was taxable, the receipt should reflect the same tax as the invoice it settles, so the two documents reconcile. Switch the tax treatment to none for a simple acknowledgement of money received.
