Frequently asked questions
How is RD interest calculated?
Each instalment earns interest only for the months it is actually in the account. The first deposit earns for the whole term, the last for a single month. Interest compounds quarterly, so the calculation is done instalment by instalment rather than on the total.
Why does an RD return less than an FD at the same rate?
Because the money goes in gradually. In a twelve-month RD the average rupee is invested for about six and a half months, not twelve โ so the same rate produces roughly half the interest. It is not a worse product, just a different one: an RD is for money you do not have yet.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, at your slab rate, exactly like an FD. TDS applies above โน40,000 of interest in a year across your deposits with that bank.
What if I miss an instalment?
Most banks charge a small penalty per missed month and may close the account after a few consecutive misses, paying out at a reduced rate. Setting up a standing instruction avoids the problem entirely.
