Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the total divided by the count. The median is the middle value when sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. They coincide in a neat symmetric set and diverge as soon as it is skewed.
When is the median better than the mean?
Whenever a few extreme values would distort the picture — incomes, house prices, response times. One very large value drags the mean upwards while leaving the median untouched, which is why median income is the more informative figure.
What does standard deviation mean?
How far, on average, values sit from the mean. A small figure means tightly clustered data; a large one means widely spread. This uses the population formula, appropriate when your list is the complete set rather than a sample.
What if some values repeat equally often?
The set has multiple modes and all of them are shown. If nothing repeats at all, there is no mode — the tool says so rather than picking one arbitrarily.
